If the hearing aid is whistling when you have it in, then one of the following are most likely to be the reason:
- You may have a build-up of earwax; your Audiologist or GP can check this
- The earpiece is not fitted correctly
- The tubing may be split, or has come out of position (contact Audiology for replacement tubing)
- The ear mould is too small (contact Audiology for a new mould)
- The ear mould is cracked (contact Audiology for a new mould)
- The hearing aid may have developed an internal whistle (contact Audiology)
- Check the hearing aid is not switched to the “T” switch or the program switch has not been pressed by mistake
- Check that the battery is the right way round
- Try putting in a new battery
- Check that the earpiece is not blocked with earwax
- Check that the tubing is not split or twisted
- Check whether or not there are droplets of condensation in the tubing, if so disconnect the tubing from the hearing aid and blow through the tubing
- The hearing aid may be damaged or defective
If any part of your hearing aid feels uncomfortable, please check the following:
- The tubing has been replaced within the last 6 months
- Your earpiece is not worn, twisted, cracked or broken
- You are fitting the hearing aid correctly, both inside and behind the ear
- (if you change your own tubing) You are not cutting the tubing too short
- Remove the hearing aid battery and dry the hearing aid with a tissue
- Open the battery drawer and leave the aid to fully dry for a day or two
- Insert a new battery
- Make sure you have not accidently turned the volume of the hearing aid down. Opening and closing the battery drawer will reset the volume. Please note that not all hearing aids have an adjustable volume
- If you feel your hearing has deteriorated and you are struggling to hear then please contact us – we generally test your hearing every 3-5 years. If you feel your hearing has suddenly deteriorated then please go to A&E
- Make sure the tube is not blocked. If it is then detach the tube from the hearing aid and wash it in warm soapy water. Make sure you allow the tube to dry completely before you reattach it
