The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is a tertiary referral centre covering a local population of approximately 550,000, but with a total catchment of 1.2 million, including North East Lincolnshire, Scarborough and York District of North Yorkshire.
We have a total of 36 beds on wards 26 and 27. There are 14 monitored step-down beds (Higher Observation Bays) within the ward 26 and 27 bed base. We have a Post-Operative Anaesthetic Area within the Intensive Care Unit for our patients’ immediate recovery following cardiac surgery and a total of 8 beds in the Intensive Care Unit (CICU 1) at the Centre for Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery on the Castle Hill Hospital site.
There are 3 purpose built theatres with modern facilities to perform all varieties of cardiothoracic procedures. Approximately 700 cardiac and 700 diagnostic and major thoracic procedures are performed annually, including elective, trauma and emergency cases like dissecting aneurysms of the aorta.
