You will receive one of three possible results:
All clear
24 out of 25 women who attend screening will receive an ‘all clear’ result. This means we have found no abnormal changes in your breasts at this time and you will be recalled for screening in approximately 3 years’ time. We recommend that you stay breast aware in between appointments and see your GP if you notice any changes.
Technical Recall
A few women will receive a letter asking them to return for further images for a ‘technical reason’. This means that there is a problem such as blurring due to movement or some of the image missing. Until the image has been repeated, the examination is not classed as completed so a full result will be sent to you when the extra image has been taken. This letter DOES NOT indicate that we have found abnormalities in your breast.
Further Assessment
1 in 25 women will be invited back to the screening department for the second stage of screening. This means we need to investigate further, and do some more tests, including Ultrasound examination, possibly more X-rays and sometimes, a small tissue sample may be taken. Being invited back for assessment does not mean that you definitely have cancer, 3 out of every 4 women recalled will need no further treatment and will be seen again in 3 years as normal.
