Referral criteria

• We accept referrals for patients of any age
• The child is not currently under the Hospital Eye Service
• They may be struggling with symptoms such as:
  • diplopia
  • blurred vision
  • loss of vision
  • nystagmus
  • squint
  • ptosis
  • defective eye movements
  • or loss of peripheral vision

How to make an internal referral

Please write to the Orthoptic Department with the details of the patient and synopsis of their current difficulties. Please also note any specific test that you require if known.

Referral criteria

• Age 6 months to 6 years
• The child is not currently under the Hospital Eye Service
• There is concern over a child’s vision or the presence of a squint
• There is significant first degree family history of long-sightedness or  squint
• Any patient with possible nystagmus, ptosis, photophobia, abnormal head posture or pupil defect

Where any of the above are clear and obvious a direct referral to the Eye Clinic should be sought.

Referral criteria

We accept referrals for any patient with additional needs where there is concern over a squint or a child’s visual ability.

In children older than 7 years please consider advising an eye test with their local optometrist unless following discussion with parents it is deemed the patient will not manage a routine eye test.

Referral criteria

• Age: minimum 4 years no upper age limit
• The patient being referred must have a known cause for their reduced vision i.e. a formal diagnosis
• The patient has had a recent eye test and the prescription can no longer be updated to improve their vision

Referral criteria

We accept any patient who has suffered a stroke or brain injury who is having visual difficulties and you feel would benefit from orthoptic involvement.

They may be struggling with symptoms such as

• diplopia
• blurred vision
• loss of vision
• nystagmus
• squint
• ptosis
• defective eye movement
• or loss of peripheral vision

Children do not need to be referred to the service.

Children will automatically be enrolled in the service.

If you feel a child has not been included or are unsure of the results please call the Orthoptic Team on 01482 816605

Referral criteria

• Age minimum 7 years no upper age limit
• Patient should be able to sit up at a table for up to 20 minutes
• Patient should have the ability to follow simple instructions
• Patient has a diagnosis explaining visual field defect

• There is concern a child may have difficulty with visual processing which may be contributing to reading and learning difficulties
