Clinical Pharmacy Services
We provide the following clinical services within the Queen's Centre:
Involves a patient's medicines reconciliation done by a medicines management technician to ensure correct therapy prescribed on admission to elective and emergency patients. Pharmacists undertake a review of in-patient care and chemotherapy regimens, for safe and effective prescribing.
Requires Pharmacy staff to undertake multidisciplinary rounds to identify patients going home, and facilitation medicines supply to ensure safe and timely discharge from hospital. This may include arranging complex end of life packages to support patient wishes.
Involves assessment of chemotherapy patients, to allow pre-dispensing of supportive medication, tailored to chemotherapy regimens, and individual patients' needs. The pharmacy team also undertakes medication counselling at 1st cycle of chemotherapy for all patients; this covers how to take supportive medicines and what to expect as therapy progresses.
Involves pharmacy team supporting applications for patients to receive cancer therapies which are not routinely funded through standard NHS routes. This allows timely and efficient access to a list of restricted cancer therapies for our patients.
Pharmacy Clinical Trials Services
The role of the pharmacy in relation to clinical research is:
- To safeguard subjects and health care professionals by ensuring that Investigational Medicinal Products are appropriate for use and are procured, handled, stored and used safely and correctly in line with current guidance.
- To ensure that Investigational Medicinal Products are managed and dispensed to patients in accordance with the duly approved current clinical trial protocol.
- To ensure that all pharmacy clinical trials procedures comply with relevant guidelines and regulations.
Thereby ensuring patients have access to new and investigational medicines both safely and at the earliest opportunity.
Pharmacy Aseptic Compounding Services
The staff in the pharmacy aseptic unit prepare and dispense 35,000 sterile injections and infusions each year for patients at Castle Hill Hospital and Hull Royal Infirmary.
These include the following:
- Chemotherapy drugs
- Monoclonal antibodies infusions
- Intravenous nutrition products (PN)
These medicines are made under strict conditions to ensure that they are sterile and safe to use. We work with your clinic to ensure your medicines are ready in anticipation of your appointment or as soon as possible after arrival, however depending on the type of chemotherapy you are receiving, we may need to wait until you have arrived in the clinic and had some further tests before we can commence preparation. In these cases we work with the clinic to estimate when your medicines will be ready.
