The Lymphoedema Team currently has 2 Lymphoedema Clinical Nurse Specialists who are trained in all aspects of Lymphoedema Management, including Le duc Medical Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).
We offer a cancer-related lymphoedema service on an out patient basis Monday to Friday. Referrals made to the service are offered a new patient appointment with a Clinical Nurse Specialist where a management program will be planned with the patient.
As lymphoedema is a life long condition our aim is to implement a management program which may include daily skin care, exercise, compression garments and simple lymphatic drainage (maintenance treatment).
Once the patient is able to demonstrate that they can self manage their condition and that their lymphoedema is stable, we will then discharge them back to the care of their GP.
We offer intensive treatment to patients with moderate to complicated lymphoedema in the form of Medical Lymphatic Drainage and multi layer lymphoedema bandaging which is given daily over a 3 week period.
The lymphoedema team also offer prophylactic advice to patients at risk of developing lymphoedema following cancer and its treatments (surgery to remove lymph nodes and radiotherapy).
